One of the most important elements of writing – whatever the form – is reader awareness. You’ve got to know where your reader is and how they’re interpreting your words.

In fiction, that might mean placing a cunning little narrative timebomb in an early paragraph so you can explode it later. In teaching, you have to know how to structure and present your material to advance the students’ learning. In business, you need to anticipate exactly what your customer is looking for and speak to them in a way that makes them feel reassured.

Good writing places your voice inside the reader’s head, communicating with them personally.
